Online Bookkeeping
A new development is an integration of software and
the web. Rather than have to maintain your own software on your own computer
(often an expensive & time consuming effort), some services have been
started that allow you to do your bookkeeping over the web.
The largest such service, and so far the best that
have seen, is NetLedger, based in Menlo Park, CA. It has a system that is very
similar to Quicken and QuickBooks.
In fact, it even allows QuickBooks
data files to be converted to its format. At just $4.95 a month, it’s much
less expensive than having to buy new software every year, which has become the
pattern for almost all bookkeeping programs.
Another big benefit to this new concept in bookkeeping
is the ability for your accountant to access the data from anywhere. I’m
looking forward to this new efficiency. It will make keeping up to date on my
clients’ status, and correcting any mistakes I find, so much easier than the
old fashioned method, where they send me their data files or print-outs.
If you are interested in checking out NetLedger, you
can test drive it for free for 30 days by clicking on the banner below.

QuickBooks OnLine
Intuit has recently upgraded its online
version. It's a nice convenient system. My only complaint is that, while
it will allows you to upload QuickBooks data files that you have already been
working with on your own computer (and thus not lose any prior information), it
doesn't work in the other direction. You become a kind of captive to the
online system and can't later switch back to a stand alone version of QuickBooks
without losing the info from your online time. This is also a drawback to
the NetLedger system.
