Choosing Clients
Unlike many businesses, we have an
overabundance of clientele and work to handle. Rather than hire employees
to help, and create a mountain of additional chores, we have decided to cut back
on the difficult clients we have worked with. We have been dropping several
clients based on various criteria, such as the following.
Patience: We take pride in doing the highest
quality work. However, we can't just drop everything to work on someone's
stuff. If you can't be patient, you need to find someone else.
However, for good clients with true emergency situations, we are willing to move
projects to the front of the line for double our normal billing rates. We
have found that the number of emergencies drops when people are confronted with
that financial option.
Threats and Promises:
Threats to leave if we don't do special favors will result in a goodbye
from us. Likewise, promises of referrals for special favors mean nothing
to us.
Organization: We are no longer tolerating
messy shoe box clients. If you are unwilling to set up your bank accounts
and credit cards on QuickBooks, you need to
find another tax preparer.
Payment: It's hard enough doing the
complicated and messy work we do for clients. Making us fight to get paid
is more than we can deal with. Quibbling over our fees or delays in
paying for work done will not be tolerated. Our ideal clients prepay for all work.
Not cooperating with how we prefer payment (faxed checks or PayPal) is also not
something we have any patience for.
Courtesy: We have our ways of conducting
business and appreciate clients cooperating with those, including being on time
for scheduled phone appointments. Anyone who believes that rude abusive
language to anyone in our office, especially Sherry, is acceptable, will have to
find another tax advisor.
Truthfulness: We are honest in everything we
do and expect it in return. We cannot work with anyone who
is less than 100% truthful with us.
PIA Factor: Being a pain in the butt
may be cute to some people; but it's not for us. Life is too short and we
have far too many clients already; so PIAs can look elsewhere for tax and
accounting help.
